Uniting for Change: IOM and Mission 89’s Anti-Trafficking Awareness Event in Lagos for UN World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, July 30th, 2023

On July 30th, 2023, Lagos, Nigeria witnessed a momentous event as IOM and Mission 89 joined forces to commemorate the UN World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. With unwavering commitment, we rallied the youth and various stakeholders to raise awareness against human trafficking, all with a shared vision of creating a better, safer world.

The event was nothing short of inspiring, as young minds and esteemed guests came together to take a stand against this grave issue. A highlight of the day was the symbolic Wall of Dream, where aspirations were shared with hope and determination. Among the many voices, Edafe Matthew EseOghene beautifully captured the essence of our mission with his words on Twitter – “Helping to chart a better path for the youths of the world, helping to keep the beautiful game beautiful and clean.”

The Ball Juggle Challenge brought smiles and camaraderie, transcending barriers to reinforce the power of unity in our pursuit of change. It was evident that the youth had embraced their role as torchbearers in safeguarding the integrity of the beautiful game and securing their dreams from exploitation.

The MOU Signing Ceremony marked a significant moment, as key stakeholders formalized partnerships to bolster our collective efforts against human trafficking. Through these alliances, we are poised to make a lasting impact in the fight against this global challenge.

In the words of Laurent M.J. DE BOECK, assigned Chief of Mission of IOM to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, “While I strongly believe that football is a noble sport bringing together people through team play and solidarity, I must warn young footballers to be cautious and always verify promises made by people pretending to be agents. Unfortunately, young footballers are targeted by people without scruples who made them pay to reach their dreams. It is important to verify the veracity of those promises prior to embarking into any sort of engagement. We have seen so many youths being lured and exploited. IOM Nigeria welcomes the partnership with Mission 89, a valuable partner in raising awareness and empowering youth against Trafficking in sports.”

Our heroes of change received heartfelt recognition for their exceptional contributions. Their dedication continues to serve as a beacon of inspiration, driving us all to work together for a safer, more equitable world.

“As we look back on this significant day, we want to thank everyone who played a part, worked together, and supported to make this event happen. Your help has paved the way for lasting change, and together, we’ve moved a step closer to a world where every young dream can thrive.” – Lerina Bright, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Mission 89

Our message – #NotInOurGame to Human Trafficking in Sport – resonates far and wide, uniting us all in a common purpose. With renewed determination, we forge ahead, guided by the vision of a future free from exploitation, where the beautiful game remains beautiful and clean.
